Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a common sexually-transmitted disease (STD) that can cause warts and also lead to cancer in both men and women. According to the CDC, the human papillomavirus vaccine, or HPV shot, prevents the most common types of HPV that cause these often life-threatening problems.

Getting the HPV shot will help prevent the Human Papillomavirus, which can lead to the following conditions and symptoms.
HPV is a common STD that is easily transmitted from one person to the next through sexual contact, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex. Living with HPV is similar to living with any other sexually-transmitted disease or virus — irritating and painful at best and life-threatening at worst.
When living with HPV, it’s important to always disclose your condition with your sexual partners in advance and to take the necessary precautions, including using condoms, to prevent further infection and the spread of infection. It’s also important to remember that even if you and your sexual partner have both tested positive for HPV in the past, there are different strains out there, so it’s still best to use protection when engaging in any and all forms of sex.
Unsure if you want yourself or your child to get the HPV vaccination? Here are just some of the many long-term and short-term benefits of getting the HPV shot as young as 9 years old.
The most common people to get an HPV shot are pre-teens. However, the HPV shot is currently approved for use in both males and females between the ages of 9 and 26. It’s important to receive the vaccine as early as possible and before engaging in sex since the HPV vaccine works best for those who have not yet been exposed to the virus. However, if you are older and/or have already had sexual relations, you should still consider receiving the shot.
If you have already been exposed to (carry one strain of HPV in you), you can still benefit from getting the vaccine — it can protect you from the other strains that you don’t have yet. However, the HPV shot is not meant to cure or treat an existing infection. There’s no need to seek out a specific HPV vaccine for the strains you don’t have as the HPV shot should cover all known strains as a whole.
The HPV shot needs to initially be given in two to three doses, which are recommended to be spread out between about a six to 12-month period. If the second dose is given any earlier than six months after the first dose, then a third dose is suggested. A third dose is also recommended for those starting the vaccination process over the age of 15. In general, after getting both shots, depending on the HPV vaccine, it can protect against infections for about six to 12 years. After that, it is recommended that you receive another HPV shot.
The HPV shot is given in two to three doses and is given in the muscle of either the upper arm or the thigh. The arm is recommended for younger people, while the thigh is best for older patients who may have a hard time finding a vein in their arms.
While there seem to be polarizing opinions about vaccinations in general, it’s important that we discuss some common myths about the HPV shot specifically. At NIMVAX, we want to ensure that everyone is able to receive the vaccines they need and that they understand that the HPV shot and any other vaccine that they may receive at our vaccination clinic are safe and effective.
Some common myths or misconceptions about the HPV shot are that it is ineffective, extremely painful, and may cause severe reactions including death. In reality and according to many years of research and statistics, the HPV shot is extremely effective at preventing the virus, will not hurt more than any other shot — i.e. a small pinch and maybe a sore arm for a day — and it won’t cause any short- or long-term reactions either. Getting the HPV vaccination is much safer than contracting and living with HPV.
