Who Should Be Vaccinated for The Flu?

Influenza (the Flu) is a common respiratory infection that often causes serious complications in many people. An outbreak occurs every year typically during the winter, which is why it is also called seasonal flu. Certain groups of people are more likely to end up with serious complications due to a flu infection than others. For these groups (young children, seniors, and people with preexisting medical conditions) getting an influenza vaccine is highly recommended. While the CDC recommends the flu vaccine for everyone above six months of age, these categories of people need it more.

Pregnant Women

If you are pregnant before the flu season begins, you should get the vaccine. This is because pregnancy tends to alter how your body handles infections like the flu. All pregnant women need the flu vaccine to protect themselves and their babies from infection. The vaccine can be administered safely at any stage during the pregnancy from conception to birth.

Older Adults

Adults that are 65 years and older may get more severe complications as a result of the flu. Generally, the eldery receive vaccinations against flu later in the year (September/October). If they get vaccinated too early, the protective strength of the antibodies may reduce and render the body defenseless come flu season.

Young Children

It is recommended that children six months and older need to be vaccinated against the flu. According to a 2017 study, taking a flu vaccine significantly reduces the risk of a child dying from the flu. Children between the ages of six months to eight years old are often given two doses of the vaccine at least four weeks apart for the first time. Subsequently, they’ll only need a single annual dose ahead of the flu season. Babies below six months of age should not get the vaccine.

People With Weakened Immune Systems

Adults that suffer from chronic diseases are also at higher risks of contracting severe complications if they come down with the flu. Examples of such illnesses include asthma, diabetes, stroke, heart and kidney diseases, among others. Similarly, people with lower immunity due to disease treatment or medication such as steroids or cancer treatment are also at higher risk of complications and should take the vaccine.

The flu vaccine is recommended for almost everybody. However, if you have a history of allergy to the vaccine or any of its constituents, you should not take the vaccine. Also, those with certain conditions that affect the immune system need to check with their physician before taking the vaccine.
